Stroke Center

Northwest Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. Northwest Medical Center received this distinction after the Joint Commission conducted an announced on-site review in April, 2007.

Northwest Medical Center demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.

Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation's third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke ever 45 second and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's statements/guidelines for stroke care. The Joint Commission launched the program—the nation's first—in 2003. A list of programs certified by the Joint Commission is available at www.jointcommission.org.

Surgical Services

At Northwest Medical Center, outpatient surgery saves time and expense for patients and minimizes interference in their home life and employment. Outpatient surgery is often referred to as same-day surgery.
About one-third of operations that in the past have required an overnight stay in the hospital can now be performed effectively and safely on an outpatient basis...in a day or less!

We recently added two new surgical procedures...Kyphoplasty and Laparoscopic Antireflux Surgery.

Kyphoplasty - a new treatment used to help treat patients who suffer from vertebral fractures.  This minimally invasive procedure is performed through a small incision, creating a narrow pathway into the fractured bone and allowing the insertion of a KyphX balloon.  At Northwest Medical Center, we can treat Vertebral Body Compression Fractures and patients are usually discharged the next day and can return to their normal activities.
